Somebody walks into the shop with a photo on their phone. Their grandfather’s ranch brand. A logo their nephew drew. A rusted-out sign they want remade in quarter-inch steel. And they ask the question every fabricator has heard: “Can you cut this?”
The honest answer used to be “yes, after an hour of tracing it in CAD.” A photo is pixels; your laser needs vectors — clean closed contours it can follow. Getting from one to the other meant redrawing the thing by hand, fighting an auto-trace tool that outputs a jagged mess of a thousand tiny line segments, or paying someone on the internet $40 and waiting two days.
So we built a free converter that runs in your browser and does it in about a minute. Here’s the workflow.
Step 1: Take a Decent Photo
Garbage in, garbage out. You don’t need a studio — a phone photo is fine — but three things matter: shoot as straight-on as you can, get even light without hard glare or shadows across the face, and fill the frame with the subject. The tool auto-straightens perspective and adapts to uneven lighting, so it forgives a lot. But the cleaner the photo, the cleaner the cut file.
Step 2: Drop It In
Open the Image to DXF Converter and drop the photo on the mat. It runs entirely in your browser — the photo never uploads anywhere, which matters if you’re working on a customer’s design.
The tool auto-detects the subject, squares it up, and traces it. For a metal or wood sign, use Sign mode — it isolates the sign from the background, straightens it, and adds the plate outline. For a logo, drawing, or any other picture, switch to Image mode and it traces everything without the sign assumptions. Light design on a dark background? Flip Invert.
Step 3: One Slider Does Most of the Work
The main control is Smoothing. Slide toward “clean” and you get smooth, flowing curves ready for the cutting table — this is what you want 90% of the time. Slide toward “faithful” and it keeps every bump and detail of the original photo. If you’re engraving instead of cutting, turn on Centerline and it generates single-line paths down the middle of each stroke instead of outlines — the difference between engraving a letter in one pass and outlining it in two.
Step 4: Set the Real Size and Export
Type in the actual width you’re cutting — 12 inches, 400 millimeters, whatever the job calls for — and the file exports to scale. No more importing a DXF and discovering your sign is the size of a postage stamp.
Export gives you SVG or DXF. The DXF is written as R12 polylines with true arcs — not thousands of chopped line segments — so it opens clean in LightBurn, your CAM software, or PolygonLogix itself, and your machine gets real G02/G03 arc moves instead of stuttering through a polyline approximation.
One Tip for Cut-Through Designs
If you’re cutting all the way through — a stencil, a sign where the letters are removed — remember that the middles of letters like O, A, and R will fall out on the floor. Turn on Auto-bridges and the tool ties those floating islands to the plate with small tabs automatically. Your counters stay attached, stencil-style.
CAD PDFs Get Special Treatment
One more trick: if you drop in a PDF of a CAD drawing, the tool doesn’t trace it like a picture. It pulls the actual vector geometry out of the PDF and sorts it by line weight — so you can keep the part outline and throw away the dimension lines and title block. If a customer sends you a print instead of a DXF, that’s a two-minute recovery instead of a redraw.
